Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This advanced course aims at presenting in-depth recent developments in organometallic catalysis and to help students understand how to critically analyze the scientific literature.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to identify the different types of olefin metathesis reactions and the transition metal-based catalysts used to promote these reactions. They will also be able to determine the scientific value of an article from the literature, to summarize correctly its content and to present it orally.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Notions of organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, and catalysis. The first part of the Organic Chemistry III course on organometallic chemistry taught in the third bachelor in chemical sciences is a good introduction to this course. The knowledge of English is required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course is made of two parts.
The first part (10 h) consists in a series of five lectures (2 h each) devoted to the advanced study of organic reactions catalyzed by transition metal complexes, with a focus on recent developments in olefin metathesis and related reactions. It is illustrated by conferences and interviews given by Yves Chauvin, Robert H. Grubbs, and Richard R. Schrock, the three laureates of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2005 for ther work on "the development of the metathesis method in organic synthesis".
In the second part of this course, each student receives a recent article from the literature that he/she has to analyze in a critical way and to present in front of the class during a brief seminar.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This course will be given during the first quadrimester. The exact schedule is to be determined according to the availability of all participants.

Recommended or required readings

Detailed lecture notes written in English are available as pdf files from the student portal 'my ULg' or via the web site http://www.lcfi.ulg.ac.be/cata/.
The scientific articles used for personal work will be available at the science and engineering library.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment will consist in the presentation of a brief seminar (15 minutes) on a recent literature article, followed by questions & answers.
