Organisation and examination
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Introduction to quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), Validation of analytical methods
Tome I: Electrochemical methods of analysis. Basic Concepts; potentiometry, membrane electrodes ; electrolysis, coulometry, polarography: classical, differential and anodic stripping; amperometry.
Tome II: Introduction to mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques GC-MS and LC-MS
Tome III: Spectral methods of analysis. General devices: sources of light, dispersive systems and FourierTransform systems, detectors. Emission spectrometry: flame, ICP and ICP-MS. Atomic absorption. Molecular, UV-Visible and Infra-red absorption. Raman scattering. Comparison and application of the various methods.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To present with some details, the most current methods of analysis, based on physical processes. The aspect mainly developed is the quantitative aspect with an introduction to Quality assurance. This course however does not approach NMR, matters which belong to other courses.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Good knowledge of the basic concepts of electrochemistry, atomic and molecular spectroscopy
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
See below
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Theoretical courses (30h): 1st quadrimester. Face to face. Copies of lecture slides (powerpoint) are available. Short movies of analytical methods have been recorded and are available on the plateform e-campus. A selection of analytical methods (polarography, GC-MS, ATR-FT-IR et Raman) are directly used in live during the course to illustrate the theoritical concepts.
Recommended or required readings
- Full notes are available in 3 tomes : electrochemistry, Introduction to chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and the spectral methods of analysis. They present the basic concepts which will be exposed. - Moreover, the course is presented via a powerpoint in French and English provided to the students. - The students can obtain additional information, in particular in the excellent work: PRNICIPES D'ANALYSE INSTRUMENTALES by SKOOG, WEST and HOLLER, DeBoeck Université, 5th edition (2003)
Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation consists in a 4h written examination in January covering all topics including theory and direct applications
A 4h written examination in 2nd session (August/September) if the note is strictly lower than 10/20
Work placement(s)
see CHIM9298-1
