Learning unit contents
Workshop 1
Atelier 3.1 « Ecriture de l'espace »: « Ultratotem »
The workshop aims to develop the analysis, synthesis and communication skills of the students. They will summarize the experience from their first two years of studies, by exploiting and combining the different skills developed in the expression and communication of an architectural project.
Workshop 2
Atelier 3.2 " Ecritures de l'espace" : "Rythmes de l'espace"
The workshop aims to develop creativity and the taste for formal research through experimental exercises around formal vocabulary, forms and their interactions, in such a way as to help architecture students develop their own plastic language in fields other than architecture.
Please note that the program of both workshops can be integrated following the pedagogical project. Both workshops participate into the subject taught and in this case, the teachers work together and give an integrate evaluation. Such an organisation may be favored in order to promote the synthesis exercice.
Workshop 1
Atelier 3.1 « Ecriture de l'espace »: « Ultratotem »
The workshop "Ultratotem" aims to develop the analysis, synthesis and communication skills of the students. They will summarize the experience from their first two years of studies, by exploiting and combining the different skills developed in the expression and communication of an architectural project.
Educational expectation are:
- critical analysis of an architectural project and its representations;
- sensitive proficiency of the tools of representation and presentation of an architectural project: design, layout, graphics, video, photography;
- capacity for research and experimentation, ability to take risks
- development of a sensitive and critical posture regarding a particular request, seeking a balance between message to transmit and medium to use.
The workshop revolves around two main rhythms: explosion and condensation
- The first is understood as the time of research and critical analysis: students are encouraged to seek, to break down and analyze architectural projects, representations thereof. They are required to strengthen their critical sense and sensibility through the selection and analysis of references as varied as possible (graphic, spatial, artistic, common, ordinary or exceptional ...)
- The second step is that of representation and presentation. Referred by the research and preliminary analyzes, it is to shape a certain number of intentions in a synthetic form, meaningful and powerful. The students must make choices, define a posture, a particular attitude towards data collected and that the final requirement of the exercise. The student will have to rearrange existing elements or create new forms, new representations.
Please note that the program of both workshops can be integrated following the pedagogical project. Both workshops participate into the subject taught and in this case, the teachers work together and give an integrate evaluation. Such an organisation may be favored in order to promote the synthesis exercice.
Workshop 2
The workshop 2 'PLASTIC RESEARCH' aims to develop creativity and the taste for formal research through experimental exercises around formal vocabulary, forms and their interactions, in such a way as to help architecture students develop their own plastic language in fields other than architecture.
The workshop essentially suggests various drawing exercises but also explores other plastic arts such as sculpture and painting. Themes are chosen with a view to addressing, in a creative and stimulating way, drawings incorporating observation, composition, colour and volume.
Drawing is not simply seen as a means of transposing reality, but rather as a tool for observation, reflection, research and expression depending on the view of contemporary art which is adopted: a tool to achieve deeper understanding of objects and the world.
The exercises which are proposed develop the sense of observation, proportions and precision, using visual acuity. The course is not, however, only focused upon the acquisition of dexterity, but also on appropriation of drawing in an inventive way with a view to enabling the acquisition of one's own personal graphic and poetic language: a means for future architects to exercise creativity.
Three main themes cut through the three years of the Bachelors programme:
- Kinesthesia
- Awareness of shapes and forces
- Colour and metaphor
The B3 programme, while integrating these three themes, takes a closer look at the 'Rhythms of space'.
Please note that the program of both workshops can be integrated following the pedagogical project. Both workshops participate into the subject taught and in this case, the teachers work together and give an integrate evaluation. Such an organisation may be favored in order to promote the synthesis exercice.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Workshop 1
Atelier 3.1 « Ecriture de l'espace »: « Ultratotem »
The B3 workshops offer a synthesis of learning for bachelor's students. They use the knowledge acquired in the workshops on methods of expression, as well as the knowledge acquired during the architecture workshops and theory courses.
Although the workshop leads to synthesis, it also aims to develop a system of questioning to be followed and used in the practical application of the architecture project.
Workshop 2
Workshop 2 Drawing is obviously seen as a language which is an indispensable part of the training of an architect, observing, researching-sketching-designing, and communicating being the three themes for training, three fundamentally complementary objectives continued through to B3.
Identifying connections, observing relationships, and identifying cohesive elements have all formed one of the main themes in earlier years ... B3 consists of exploring synthesis, of demonstrating skills through reflection which includes the fourth dimension: the concept of time.
By the end of the course, students should therefore be capable, as in earlier years of:
- addressing a subject by clearly identifying a precise field for investigation
- constructing a correct and methodological sketch in perspective, respecting the rules and elements of observation
- drawing with flexibility, confidence and precision
- taking reasoned decisions in terms of composition
- correctly using specific vocabulary during discussions
- understanding relationships between space, value, matter and using them in a creative way in their compositions
- addressing different scales of work and adapting research methods
- using different tools appropriately to meet objectives
In addition, students will be able to:
- understand movement and the concept of time
- graphically represent the body in space
- integrate research instructions in such a way as to go beyond them and freely and creatively explore a given context.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Workshop 1
Atelier 3.1 « Ecriture de l'espace »: « Ultratotem »
All experience acquired during the first two years (classes and workshops).
Workshop 2
Students are requested to make connections with subjects relating to the history of architecture, theory of architecture, history of art, urban and rural history, philosophy, semantics, courses relating to the theory of composition and methodology of architectural projects and, more generally, any parallel approaches which aim to develop their understanding of forms of space, open spaces such as daily living areas, spaces which convey meaning, such as imaginary spaces or that of memory, etc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Workshop 1
Atelier 3.1 « Ecriture de l'espace »: « Ultratotem »
theoretical presentations by the lecturer followed by application by the students. The aim: to set in motion personal research with the aid of the lecturers.
Workshop 2
This course is organised in workshops. Our workshops are planned as 'laboratories' where students can 'make mistakes successfully'. We are more interested in awareness than the 'right' answer to a requirement, whatever that may be. We focus on the means rather than the result. We encourage creative and accepted individual initiative through dialogue. In short, we aim to develop 'plastic intelligence' through the three following angles: observation (knowledge, control), research (exploration, formalisation), and communication (establishment, argumentation, clarity). External guests from other disciplines will occasionally be invited to participate in the workshop, depending on the themes being addressed.

Assessment methods and criteria
Workshop 1
Atelier 3.1 « Ecriture de l'espace »: « Ultratotem »
Presentation work will be the subject of an assessment.
Attendance to the workshop is compulsory and part of the evaluation of the student.
Students taking the course as a residual credit and who can't attend it regularly due to scheduling constraints regarding other courses must always report it to the responsible teachers so that they can possibly establish appropriate monitoring.
Moreover, students can only enroll in this course through anticipated credits if it is compatible with the schedules of their other courses. An approval of teachers is compulsory.
Workshop 2
Assessment is continuous. Attitude in the workshop and general approach will be taken into account as well as the results achieved. Each thematic exercise will be assessed; this is weighted depending on how important the piece of work is.
