Learning unit contents

*Introduction to the intangible cultural heritage  (ICH): definition, history and presentation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Heritage and its implementation in Belgium and other countries (in accordance with ERASMUS students' origins)
*PCI contents: oral expressions (languages/ songs/ legends), performing arts (music/ dance/ puppets theatre), rituals and social practices (festivals/ games/ devoutness) and traditional knowledges (handycrafts/ alimentation/ medecine).

*Methodology to conduct field inquiries, focused on traditional festivals.
*The role of institutions, researchers, audio-visual media and museums in raising awareness about ICH for contents transmission and mediation.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To identify the intangible cultural heritage and understand its importance and social stakes
To know its potential implementations and everyone's role in its transmission and safeguarding
 
 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Knowledge of French (B2-C1)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students must inquire and build up a file on a specific field of the intangible cultural heritage by choosing witnesses.
For this current year, we'll focus on festivals and feasts (in Belgium or, for Erasmus students, in their own country).
The inquiry and its outcomes should be described in a written file.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

30 hours
Every Friday (except November, 3), from September, 22 to December 22, 15-17 pm.
We may change to 14-16 pm if the students have no course before 15 pm.
Place : Séminaire Maya Deren (séminaire cinéma), département d'information et communication, bâtiment A1, 2e étage, place du XX août.

Recommended or required readings

Every week, after the lesson, the student 'll receive the notes on his/her mail address.
This is free of charge but each student must have an individual e-address

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral evaluation on lessons contents and assessment on the personal inquiry file.
