Learning unit contents :
The course aims to introduce students to different kinds of translation, different kinds of texts and various areas of knowledge.Special attention is devoted to sight translation.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
By the end of the course students will have further developed translating responses, including the frequent need to rephrase the original.The blatant shortcomings of many source texts will have forced them to revise the common notion that a translation ought to be 'faithful to the original'. Since we cover various fields, thecourse also offers an opportunity to enlarge their knowledge and the world and to finetune their research methodology.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
A good knowledge of English and an excellent knowledge of French.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
A large part of the course consists of exercises.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Four hours a week during the second term.

Texts will be posted on MyULg or sent via email
Assessment methods and criteria :
Active involvement in the course is a plus ; the final examination consists of a written translation in class and of a sight-translation exercise.

Professional translators will be invited as guest speakers. We also offer extra sessions on some Saturday afternoons coorganized with the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters.
