Learning unit contents :
The course actualizes and implements social policies in order to question the reconfiguration of social welfare.
It bases on three points :
  • Perceived by the theories on the Welfare State
  • Deepening of the contemporary evolutions of the Welfare State
  • Put in perspective empirical of the theories of the Welfare State
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
At the end of the course, Student would be able to :
  • To analyze social policies and the evolution of Belgium Welfare State
  • To seize the complexity of the "social" and its evolution
  • To master the references and the theoretical notions relative to the theories of the "social" To apply them to a field of intervention social
 
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
The course is a step further the course : Sociological Analysis of Social Politics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures and interaction with students
The course is based on Didier Vrancken's book " Social Barbar " and on Welfare State' s theories. It is completed by a portfolio approaching the fields of the poverty and the social and occupational reintegration.
The course is organized around the presentation and around the discussion of some central sociology' s concept of social policies.
The objective is here to reveal the main concepts and the paradigms of social policies in terms of employment and poverty reduction.
Furthermore, the student will owe, by group, presented a text of popularization dealing with one of the aforesaid concepts in a field of specific study predefined by substitutes.
The course aims to be participative and feeds on student's opinion and reflections.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
At first based on ex-cathedra lectures, the course then turns to a progressive participation of the students.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The final evaluation of the course will be the synthesis of two elements:
  • Group work (identification sheet, oral presentation, summary report: 25 % of the final quotation
  • The written exam (in individual, on the contents of summary reports, notes and reference book.): 75 % of the final quotation
 
The second session will consist of a written examination based on contents of summary reports, notes and reference book.
