Learning unit contents :
  • The first chapters of the book of M. De Coster, B. Bawin Legros, M. Poncelet, Introduction à la sociologie, sixth edition, De Boeck, Brussels, 2006 and a reading portfolio.
  • This course constitutes a general introduction to sociology, its paradigms and main authors. It will introduce students to this discipline by looking at the basic concepts and authors.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
  • Introduction to sociological theory and principal authors.
  • Positioning sociology within the social sciences.
  • Understanding the main paradigms and their scientific status.
  • An introduction to personal reading of recent, accessible texts.
  • Presenting a history of sociology as a scientific discipline and positioning sociology within the social sciences.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Good general knowledge and class attendance is highly recommended.

Ex-cathedra lectures.
Rehearsals with a student instructor.

  • Multiple choice written examination in the first session (May or June), multiple-choice written examination in the second session (August or September)
  • Exempting multiple-choice written examination in January.

Course hours: 30 hours of theory given in the first term
for students of Psychology and Educational Sciences (Marc Poncelet): thursdays from 1:30pm-3:30pm in the Amphi Zoologie.
