Lecturer :
Marc Delrez
Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
The course will start with a brief introduction which will remind the students about the overall characteristics of metaphysical poetry, prior to considering the more specific example of John Donne. A biography of the latter will also be included.
Next, we shall read a selection of Donne's more typical secular (love) poems, drawn from his 'Elegies' and his 'Songs and Sonets'. Particular attention will be paid to the literary genealogy of the poems, which will be grouped together depending on their ostensible source -- whether Ovid, Petrarch, or something else.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Enhance the students' ability to decode a complex literary text; familiarize them with the idiom of Donne's poems; incite them to a reflection on the mechanisms of literary creation.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Beside an interest in poetic language, a very good command of English, alone susceptible of making one sensitive to the author's humour, subtlety and metaphysical wit, may be required.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Heuristic seminars.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face to face(s); but I might turn round.
Recommended or required readings :
A selection of poems by John Donne, together with a Powerpoint presentation correlated with the initial introduction, will be made available at the beginning of the course.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The students will be requested to write a short essay on one of those poems by John Donne that will not have been discussed in class. This essay will be then serve as the starting-point for an individual oral examination to be held in January 2016.
