Contenus du cours :

||
| The course will start with a brief introduction which will remind the students about the overall characteristics of metaphysical poetry, prior to considering the more specific example of John Donne. A biography of the latter will also be included.
Next, we shall read a selection of Donne's more typical secular (love) poems, drawn from his 4elegies' and his 'Songs and Sonets'. Particular attention will be paid to the literary genealogy of the poems, which will be grouped together depending on their ostensible source -- whether Ovid, Petrarch, or something else. |

| Enhance the students' ability to decode a complex literary text; familiarize them with the idiom of Donne's poems; incite them to a reflection on the mechanisms of literary creation. | ||

| Beside an interest in poetic language, a very good command of English, alone susceptible of making one sensitive to the author's humour, subtlety and metaphysical wit, may be required. | ||

| A selection of poems by John Donne, together with a Powerpoint presentation correlated with the initial introduction, will be made available at the beginning of the course. | ||
|
Modalités d'évaluation et critères :
|
||
| The students will be requested to write a short essay on one of those poems by John Donne that will not have been discussed in class. This essay will then serve as the starting-point for an individual oral examination to be held in January 2016. | ||
