Course contents :  
The course offers the possibility to practice translation skills from French into English via the translation of very recent articles from newspapers and magazines and written in a complex language. Some short translation exercises will complement the study of the lexical and syntactic complexities and specificities of the English language.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The students must be able to translate into English without resorting to syntactic and idiomatic calques. They should have integrated the specificities of vocabulary and construction of the English language and they should be able to write in a fluid and elegant language.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
excellent command of the English language
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
A course pack can be downloaded from MyUlg and some articles (latest news) are added as to offer the most recent linguistic developments. The students' personal translations are corrected and commented upon collectively in class.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
in-class course, Fridays 11-1pm
Recommended or required readings :  
a selection of texts can be downloaded from MyUlg at the beginning of the year, more texts are added in the course of the year as to track linguistic developments and vocabulary specificities. Short translation exercises are also posted or handed out in class.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
A written test in January will account for 20% of the final grade. Written exam in May or June: a translation of a text which has not been translated in class but will dea lwith on a topic covered in class, some short sentences with specific difficulties. The translation of excerpts from the texts translated in class may also be part of the final exam.
