Course contents :  
This course investigates the notion of the grotesque - as well as a number of related or adjacent categories such as the comic, the bizarre, the absurd, the baroque, the monstrous, the disgusting, the weird and the ridiculous - examining a wide variety of texts by writers and artists as diverse as Hieronymus Bosch, William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Samuel Beckett, Herman Melville, Sherwood Anderson, H. G. Wells, Mikhail Bakhtin, Philip Roth, William Burroughs, Chuck Palahniuk, and David Lynch. Our discussions will be leavened and alleviated by video recordings and other supporting materials.
