Course contents :

| Linguistics is a science. This implies that linguists seek to understand the different aspects of language and its functioning by studying and analyzing data and behaviours.
To do so, they apply research methodologies typical of social sciences, and use specific research tools.
This course of modern Dutch linguistics A will have the form of a research seminar in Dutch linguistics. It will focus on foreign language learning (especially Dutch by French-speaking learners). It aims at introducing the student to scientific research in linguistics and to initiate them to the research metholodgy and tools which are specific to scientific research in linguistics. In parallel, the course aims at familiarizing the students with the linguistic features of academic writing in Dutch.
In the theoretical part, the course will tackle basic methodological notions and different types of research paradigms used in applied linguistics. We will more particularly focus on corpus linguistics and quantitative experimental studies. In the practical part, we will conduct a research project (from its design to the analysis and presentation of the results).
The course is composed of five modules:
- Module 1: linguistic as a science - basis notions
- Module 2: foreign language learning - a state of the art
- Module 3: experimental research in linguistics in theory and in practice
- Module 4: corpus linguistics in theory and in practice
- Module 5: linguistic features of academic writing in Dutch
The different modules will provide the students with the necessary theoretical and methodological tools to write a MA thesis in Dutch linguistics. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- describe the factors which influence froeign language learning;
- Analyse and present a scientific article;
- make a critical study of a scientific article;
- describe the methodological steps of a study in applied linguistics;
- use the basic functions of a corpus processing software (wordlists, collocations, keywords, text comparison,...)
- make a quantitative study on a linguistic subject;
- correctly use the academic register in Dutch;
- to write a scientific paper in Dutch;
- present the results of their research.

| The course includes various teaching methods, among which:
-
formal lectures on theoretical concepts related to research methodology on the one hand and to foreign language learning on the other;
-
research seminars (discussion of scientific articles, presentation of the development of the research project)
-
hands on sessions on the use of corpus processing software and quantitative data analysis;
-
practical sessions on the linguistic features of academic writing;
-
teamwork (research project)
The course will be as interactive as possible. The active participation of the students is required to guarantee the quality of the course interactions. |

| Lecture notes will be available after each session.
During the course, the students will have to carefully read and analyse two scientific articles at choice (to choose from the portfolio of articles).

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| The final grade will be determined by different parts.
-
Class participation (20%), including the presentation of a scientific article, discussions on the development of the research project, and the dergee of interactions of the students during the seminar sessions;
-
Research paper (40%). Evalution of the content and the form;
- Oral exam = oral presentation (30%) of the research project. Evaluation of the content and the form;
-
Written exam (10%) on the linguistic features of academic writing in Dutch.
The oral and written exams of the first session will take place during the january exam session; the oral and written exams of the second session will take place at choice during the june or september exam session.
The final version of the research paper should be handed in at least three (working) days before the oral exam. |
