Course contents :
 |
| This course has two main objectives: on a theoretical level, it aims at analysing the morphological features of Dutch; on a practical level, its aim is to further develop the communication skills (both receptive and productive skills) of the students in Dutch.
In the theoretical part, we will tackle some general theoretical concepts one the one hand and analyze word formation processes on the other, by specifically looking at how they apply to Dutch.
In the practical part, we will train the communicative skills of the students by organizing the following activities:
- reading and listening comprehension exercises;
- vocabulary tests;
- essay-writing;
- transcription of a TV-report;
- the collection of a newspaper file.

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of this course, the students will be able:
- to describe general principe of Dutch morphology;
- to describe and explain how word formation processes apply to Dutch;
- to analyze these processes in an original article;
- to write a coherent essay on a general topic (B2 level)
- to understand specialized texts (B2+ level)
- to follow a natural conversation in Dutch (B2 level)
- to fluently speak Dutch (B2 level)

| The course includes formal lectures which will be as interactive as possible on the one hand and practical sessions on the other. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| The evaluation will include a written and an oral exam. In addition to the exams, two evaluation sessoins will be organized during the semester.
The written exam will include:
- questions tackling the theoretical part;
- questions focusing on the application of the theoretical concepts to concrete cases;
- a writing task (essay writing);
- a reading comprehension task;
- a writing comprehension task.
The oral exam will include:
- the lingiustic analysis of the newspaper file;
- the vocabulary of the newspaper file;
- the content of the neswpaper file (discussion);
- the vocabulary form the tanscription task
- the content of the transcription task (discussion).
The final mark will be calculated as follows:

theoretical part (20%). written and oral exams;

lexical knowledge (20%). examinations during the semester, newspaper file, transcription and any other material treated in class

receptive skills (20%). written exam

speaking skills (20%). oral exam

writing skills (20%). written exam
Note: if the students fail for one of these parts, they will fail for the whole course. |
