Course contents :  
The purpose of this theoretical and practical training is to optimize the search for scientific information, using the best sources and tools available in libraries and on the web.
Knowledge and skills acquired will be useful throughout the academic and professional careers.
The course focuses on the following topics:
  • Sources of scientific information
  • Tools optimizing retrieval of information (catalogs and bibliographic databases)
  • Process of retrieval and rapid assessment of information
  • Drafting pieces of scientific work: plagiarism, concepts of writing style and rules on citations from the American Psychological Association (APA).
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The student will be able to lead a process of retrieval information, to select information that best meet their needs and integrate them in a document, according to the standards of the APA.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
There are no prerequisites for this course. However, the habit of using computers and a minimum knowledge of scientific English are pluses.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
This course is based primarily on the lecture course. However, it is organized as to encourage students' active participation, including the correction of online exercises realized at home. The completion of these exercises require the use of a computer and the Internet (various rooms equipped with computers and wireless terminals are available to students within the University).
A visit of the Life Sciences Library (ULg) and a practical session on a computer will be proposed. The student must have previously registered to participate in one or more of these optional sessions (practical arrangements will be provided during the first session of theory).

Throughout the sessions, references of web sites will be mentioned: the consultation of these sites will be mandatory or optional (see mention in the lecture notes).
Several chapters of the following manual will also be required :
American Psychological Association. (2010). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.
This book allows students to know the standards of publication of the American Psychological Association (citations in the text, reference list, tables, figures, etc.). It is available in multiple copies in the Life Sciences Libraries.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The assessment will take place at the end of the academic year, in May/June. It will appreciate the ability to make optimal use of the tools of information retrieval (computer) and the topics studied.
During the evaluation, the student, to be accepted, will come with the following documents: identity card (or passport) and student card delivered by the University of Liege.
