Course contents :
|
| Translation of contracts, trials from various fields, warrant for arrest, lawyer's letter, economical articles and political texts, etc. Most texts are genuine documents. The names mentioned on confidential documents will be covered. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Before translating: analyse the text (read the document carefully, determine the language level, the target readers, understand the general idea instead of words, consult proper sources, underline difficulties).
During the translation process: make sure the French style is perfect as the readers are French-speaking, be absolutely faithful to the source text, write in a perfect way, no spelling and syntax mistakes.
After translating: read at least twice in order to finish up the translation and to submit a proper work. |

| Understanding perfectly the German language. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| Each week, one text (+- 350 words) to be prepared at home by the next lecture. The preparations will be proofread and check during the lecture.
Once a month, the students have to hand in a translation at a fixed date and time. The idea is to get the used to respect commitments, just like in real life. These translations will be marked and the whole (7) will be worth 20% of the final mark.
Once in a while, group works with a tasks division (terminologist, translator, proof-reader).
Occasionally, visit of a specialist (lawyer, solicitor, economist, etc.) who will give extra information. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Examination in January (+-400 words). Will be authorized: French unilingual dictionary, German unilingual dictionary, reference books for grammar and conjugation. No bilingual dictionary and no computer = 20% of the whole marks
Works (7 in total): 20%
Examination in June (+-400 words). Will be authorized: French unilingual dictionary, German unilingual dictionary, reference books for grammar and conjugation. Specialised dictionary DE>FR (juridical, economical, political) + No computer. This exam will be worth 60%. |
