Course contents :

| The content of the class is the impact of the human rights as protected by the European Convention on Human Rights on family and personal matters. A description is made of the typical mechanisms of control and interpretation used by the Court in Strasbourg and of the main principles and notions of its large jurisprudence. Throughout the courses the students will become aware of the importance of human rights for this part of private law. As a survey of the whole jurisprudence on family law cannot fit in a course of 15 hours, only a selection is made of the most important decisions concerning a concrete subject-matter (e.g. adoption by a homosexual couple). The students have to prepare the course by reading at home the next judgment or decision. A written syllabus is distributed by the professor, only this preparation will permit all participants of the course to respect the rhythm imposed by the professor. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| Objective of the course is enabling the student to follow a Dutch spoken class in law. The subject of the course, i.e. the analysis of some major decisions on Human Rights, is used as a pretext to talk and write in Dutch. An active participation of the student during the course is a must (system of non-stop evaluation). Only by doing this not only the everyday Dutch vocabulary but also the specific vocabulary on the Human Rights will be passed on (in English, French and Dutch). |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| A minimum knowledge of Dutch and family law is necessary. Foreknowledge of human rights is not a prerequisite, being interested in it is necessary. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| The method of the course consists in the analysis of jurisprudence. |
 |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
 |
| The courses are interactive. Progressively a more and more active participation of each student is required. The students have to become able to discuss in Dutch on a law topic. The accent is put on the spoken language, not on the written part of it. The teacher will take into consideration the individual starting level of the student during the courses. The participation of the student and its progress in language during the courses is an important element for the oral examination. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| The oral examination consists in a dialogue between the student and the professor. The capacity of the student to express himself in Dutch is evaluated, this dialogue must concern a subject (text, decision, newspaper-article, songtext, poem,...) freely chosen by the student but relating to the human rights and to family law. A clear message has to be expressed by the student. |
