| Course contents : | Training early childhood professionals to develop skills which are both specific to the field and cross-cutting to education and training. It concerns both those who are likely to be involved in this specific field (educational advisor, trainer, co-ordinator or mentor to professionals in the field of early childhood) as well as others affected by the challenges of professionalisation in the field of education.
This course offers a critical view of the dynamics and current challenges in the field of initial and continuous training in the field of education in early childhood in the French-speaking community in Belgium and in Europe. It asks whether the professional nature of an activity is often confused with a exclusively female 'mothering', by positioning the problem in its historical and political-administrative context. It studies the challenges of professionalising this sector by specifically targeting the question of training. It introduces the various training and approaches to professionalisation used in the field. |
 |
| Course objective : | By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify the main challenges of professionalisation in the sector and the variety of methods established for achieving this on a European level,
- contribute to designing and adjusting approaches and professionalising mechanisms,
- analyse training situations in terms of the aims of professionalisation, developing ways of improving them and sharing them with other trainers who are either in training or are working in the field.
|
 |
| Prerequisites : | having followed the course "questions and educational practices in early childhood" (F. Pirard). |
 |
| Workshops : | Either individually or in pairs, students will get in touch with a training operator (if possible registered and subsidised by the Office de la Naissance et de l'Enfance). The lecturer will provide a list of contact details, as well as an introductory letter.
Based on the analysis of documents collated and a recorded interview which is retranscribed with the organisation's sponsor, students will identify the logic of training (objectives sought, values, principles of action, approaches and training methods and individual support, evaluation methods planned, etc.). They will identify the elements likely to contribute to professionalisation.
On this basis, they will carry out a period of non-participative observation of a day's training conducted by the trainer(s) of the organisation in question. During this day, they will identify, both during formal and informal training time, a significant element (a critical moment, a crucial factor, a sequence where contradictory points of view were aired, etc.) of the problems of professionalisation in the area of education of young children. They will summarise this event in writing and will analyse the challenges it poses for professionalisation while avoiding any value judgements towards individuals (either those being trained or training).
They will submit this to the organisation's trainer(s) and request feedback. Based on this shared analysis, they will identify one or more areas for future action and question the trainer's views of the field of training professionals in early childhood. |
 |
| Organization : |
- seminars led by the trainer,
- discussion meetings with researchers and training professionals involved in working on publications on the subject,
- reading and analysis of training documents,
As well as the contribution of the trainer, students will have the opportunity to meet within the context of the course (date and place yet to be set):
- one of the authors of a key piece of work on professionalisation in the field of education in early childhood (A. Dethier). This piece of work appeared in 1995 and is currently being republished,
- a manager of a professional training organisation for professionals working on early childhood from the French-speaking community,
- a researcher from the VBJK and the University of Gand responsible for European research on professional skills and conditions for their development in the field of childhood (in April).
The course will take place during the second term from 4pm to 6pm, S01, B7a (time and room to be confirmed). |
 |
| Written notes : | A reading list including articles, legal texts, reference documents as well as bibliographical references providing a deeper look into the subject will be made available to students. This will be a reference point for the course as well as for carrying out practical work. |
 |
| Assessment : | Individual interview based on a the report drafted for the practical work and related to all the skills used during the class and concepts studied.
Criteria:
- documentary richness:
- relevance of the event identified in terms of the problems of professionalisation in the sector,
- relevance and refinement of the analysis of collated material (interview transcription, written documents, etc.), of the argument in light of the challenges of professionalisation
- the connection between theory and practice
