| Course contents : | Four steps are successively covered: Step 1 describes the chemical properties of the molecules of the living world Step 2 analyses in details the energy functions involved in the structure of biological molecules and macromolecules Step 3 describes the status of the experimental knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of the molecular components of the living cell Step 4 covers the present methods of prediction of structure and function ofmolecules involved in the cell life At the end of the course the student should possess a good knowledge of the techniques used and a view structure-function relations. The importance, but also the limitations of the present knowledge and the efforts to reach a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms should lead him, in the whole of his scientific work, to further consider the structural mechanisms involed. |
 |
| Course objective : | Demonstrate to the students that the structure of the molecules (lipids, proteins, nucleic acids) and their function are intimately related After completing the course the student is expected to - expose and synthetize chemical and structural properties of macromolecules - understand and explain the role of the various energies involved in the stabilisation of macromolecule structure - synthetize and compare the various techniques dedicated to analyze the macromolecule structure-function relationship - understand and criticize a scientific paper about protein structure and function |
