| Course contents : | The course will cover the following points: the distinction between education through the media and education concerning the media; the necessity, objectives, and methodological principles involved in education concerning the media; analysis of media-borne messages (languages, representations, typologies, technologies, demographics, producers); practical activities; presentation of available resources. |
 |
| Course objective : | This course is intended to define methodological principles, general objectives, and purposes for education concerning the media, as well as an approach to the six necessary and fundamental themes involved in a better understanding of messages carried by the media. The purpose is to allow students to invent, implement, and evaluate pedagogical procedures related to education about the media, including the use of audiovisual resources. |
 |
| Organization : | The course will take place in the Gothot room, Wednesdays from 18h to 20h00.
Most of the ideas introduced will be examined in the course of an analysis of media documents, requiring active participation on the part of students.

| Assessment : | Students have a choice between three TYPES OF WORK:
1. Analyze a still image (a publicity photo, newspaper photo, graphic illustration).
The methodology for still image analysis will be covered in class. The following work is recommended for students who choose this assignment: JOLY Martine, Introduction à l'analyse de l'image, Paris, Nathan, 1994. Students will also find useful material in the course bibliography. Still image analyses must be accompanied by the original image or a high quality copy of the image analyzed.
Students will also be required to discuss briefly the use of visual aids in the classroom.
2. Analyze an advertising spot, a documentary, or a fictional film.
a) For the analysis of an advertising spot or a documentary: The analysis must be based on two or three questions included on the questionnaire given to students during the course on education about the media.
Students will also be required to discuss briefly the use of advertising in a course on the media.
b) For the analysis of a film based on a fictional story: Students can analyze a fictional film as long as the theme of the film has a direct relationship with the subjects they are teaching or with questions taken up in the framework of the course. Work on the assignment can concentrate on a selection from or the entire work chosen for analysis. Either must be accompanied by a copy of the work selected on DVD or by clear references for the work (giving a link through which the work can be consulted online, or a reference to the work in the collections of the Médiathèque). The work must be available if the assignment is to be corrected.
Students must also briefly discuss the use of visual aids in a course on the media.
The following work is recommended for students who choose this assignment:
VANOYE Francis & GOLIOT-LETE Anne, Précis d'analyse filmique, Paris, Armand
Colin Cinéma, coll. « 128 », (rééd., Nathan 1992) 2007.
3. Write a critical review of some work. In working on this assignment, students must choose from the following list of works:
The assignment will include a precise account of the ideas developed in the work, and a critical analysis of those ideas . Thus students will learn to reflect in an original manner about what they read (give their opinions + present arguments).
DEADLINE FOR ALL ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments must be submitted IN PERSON to the instructor on Monday, March 30, or on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 BETWEEN 9h00 AND 14h00 at the office of Camille POSKIN (Building A1, second floor. Across from the secretary's office). Assignments will not be accepted unless they are properly delivered to C. POSKIN, and a receipt issued.
After evaluation of the assignments, feedback will be given to students who want more information about how their grade was arrived at. The date for such a meeting will be announced later.
REMARKS: * Assignments are to be worked on by pairs of students. The name and signature of each student and the name of the department in which the students are registered must appear on the cover of the assignment. * The assignment must be about five pages long. |
