Course contents : 1. Relationship beween language and thought; between literal meaning and meaning in context.
2. Ambiguity and vagueness.
3. Analytical implication and presupposition.
4. Lexical semantics: different types of lexical units, semantic valence, semantic features, prototypes.
5. Introduction to sentence semantics (in particular in relation with syntax) and to formal semantics.

Prerequisites : None.
This course constitutes a normal continuation of a course in general linguistics and is a good preparation for students who intend to write a memoir in a domain requiring a semantic analysis.

on Friday from 2 to 3 p.m.
Written notes : Sheets will be handed out.
Besides, the following work is recommended: I. Heim and A. Kratzer: Semantics in Generative Grammar. Blackwell. Paperback.
Assessment : Oral examination (as a rule, the aim of the questions is to check the student's understanding and ability to apply).
