Course contents : 1. Reading contemporary linguistic texts of medium difficulty and dicussing these texts and the problems dealt with.
2. Practicing basic grammar and vocabulary.
Course objective : See above. This course constitutes an introduction to research in German linguistics.
Prerequisites : The first and second year courses on German in the Department of German or Germanic Languages and Literatures of a University. Previous knowledge in German linguistics is welcome.
Workshops : 1. Obligatory:
a. Making exercises and reading linguistic texts to prepare discussion in class.
b. Translating texts at home (generally one text every fortnight).
c. Reading a book on German linguistics at home to prepare a discussion at the exam.
2. Optional: Conversation exercises.
Organization : 30 hours;

Wednesday (11-13)
Written notes : The students are expected to propose topics at least one month before the course starts.
The students are supposed to have:
- Grewendorf, Hamm, Sternefeld: Sprachliches Wissen. Suhrkamp (Taschenbuch).
- Langenscheidts Großwôrterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache.
- A German Grammar.
- Langenscheidt: basic vocabulary of German.
Sheets will also be handed out.
Assessment : Written examination.
Oral examination: theory, basic grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation.
In June.
