| Course contents : | The fundamental objectives of this course are : - Introduction - Definition of the most important concepts and theories - Presentation of the main socio-economic under-development indicators - Critical description of structural modifications experienced by developeng countries (DCs) The first part essentially deals with problems and policies concerning DC populations : demography of developing countries, under-employment and unemployment, urbanisation and migration, education and problems of income distribution, income inequality and poverty, savings and investment behaviour. The second part deals with some aspects of relation between developing and developed countries. Mainly : public aid, its forms and effectiveness; financing modes; technology transfer problems. | ||

| Course objective : | The course presents the main concepts and relevant mechanisms for analysing DC economies as well as analysis of concrete situations, available in the form of special dossiers which assemble, ampng other topical documents, the year-by-year data provided by the world development report edited by the Worl Bank and also the UNPD annual report on human development. Exercise-sessions complete the lectures. | ||

The lectures are based on the latest textbooks. For certain chapters, students are essentially advised to read different parts of "Gillis M., Perkins D., Roemer M., & Snodgrass D., Economics of Development, 4th ed., W.W. Norton & Com. Inc. New York. In addition to Gillis and alii "Economics of Development", we use Todaro M., "Economic Development", 6th edition, Longmann, 1997 and Chenery & Srinivasan Ed. "Handbook of Development Economics", vol.1, North Holland, 1998. | ||
