Learning unit contents

The cursus is composed of the chapters relative to the soft and hard tissues surgeries, including oncological and neuro surgeries. The list of the chapters is established by the European College of Veterinary Surgery (ECVS).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The training aims at providing the students completing the cursus with all the theoretical and practical tools to diagnose and personally treat the vast majority of the surgical pathologies affecting dogs and cats.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A general internship in veterinary medicine of companion animals of at least one full calendar year is an absolute prerequisite

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The student is activelly involved in all the clinical activities of the surgery service, i.e. receivings, interventions and cares to the hospitalized patients. He assists the senior clinicians at the beginning, progressively taking the lead according to his growing expertise.

Furthemore, he personally runs a clinical research project/study in order to be able to publish at least one first author paper in a scientific journal of international level.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The teaching is face-to-face.

Recommended or required readings

The student is required to have a thorough knowledge of the surgical veterinary literature in companion animals following the precise guidelines of ECVS.

The passing of the cursus is subordinated to the passing of the ECVS examination after the completion of the three year specialisation programme.

Work placement(s)

In internal médicine, anesthesiology, pathology and medical imaging, the student carries out a two-week externship in a service run by a european/american specialist of the ad-hoc discipline.
