Learning unit contents

This course focuses on the translation of texts of general interest taken from a vast array of fields. Different problems linked to the translation into the foreign language are identified and strategies are found to solve them. Introduction to how to convey the culture of the source language (French) to the target audience (Spanish) through the translation of texts with a high cultural component (recipes, tourism leaflets, newspaper articles, etc.). Introduction to terminology related to specific domains through the translation of specialized texts (business letters, financial and legal texts, etc.). Development of general writing and proofreading skills in Spanish. Development of translator competences such communication with clients in Spanish, meeting deadlines, elaborating glossaries, etc.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to analyze a text written in French and identify the problems that may arise if rendered in Spanish, based on the type of text and the translation instructions. They will also be able to comment in Spanish translation problems and to defend the solutions they propose. Moreover, they will be able to adequately use translation tools to successfully render a text in Spanish taking into account the specific linguistic, pragmatic and cultural characteristics of the target language.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Excellent reading comprehension in the source language (French). Good written competence in the target language (Spanish) with command of grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Reading, translation, comment or analysis of texts at home. Comparison and collective critical discussion of the individual work. Specific tasks in small groups and sharing of the results with the rest of the class.

Face-to-Face. Course during the 1st term. Two hours per week. Non-compulsory course given at the Université de Liège.

Additional information:

- 25% of final grade: marked translations and exercises and ongoing assessment (translations prepared at home, active participation in class, meeting deadlines, presentation of translations, comments or analysis).

- 75% of final grade: final exam consisting of the translation into Spanish of a text similar to those seen throughout the course.
