Learning unit contents

In this course, we'll be analyzing various projects in which performing arts actors attempt to act on their social environment. More precisely, we will identify a plurality of ways of intervening. We will distinguish between: direct interventions (such as performances, shows, etc.) and more subtle interventions aimed, for example, at supporting the development of specific attention (a way of questioning, investigating, connecting with others; placing oneself in a state of observation, listening, etc.) among associated audiences. All this, without neglecting the possible articulations between different ways of doing things.

 

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to :

• conduct a case study to question and describe theatrical interventions with a social aim
• highlight the political and aesthetic issues (in particular) at stake in these interventions
• mobilize and discuss conceptual and analytical contributions drawn from the literature covered in the course
• clearly set out a line of questioning and an analytical proposal

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course alternates between a lecture, reports on readings and/or case studies by students, occasional presentations by artists involved in the approaches we're interested in, and participation in the colloquium organized by the Centre d'Études et de Recherches sur le Théâtre dans l'Espace Social (CERTES - U.R. Traverses) and the Théâtre universitaire de Liège (TURLg) as part of the Rencontres Internationales de Théâtre Universitaire (RITU). We look forward to seeing you on Friday morning, November 10 (9am to 1pm, Salle des Professeurs).

Additional information:

 

Assessment is based on active participation in sessions, including out-of-class activities; submission (no later than 10 days before the exam date) of a personal paper (maximum 5 pages) formalizing the analysis of a case study (either presented during the course, or identified by the student and validated by the teacher). This means that students must produce a clear, synthetic piece of writing that is as descriptive (presenting the main factual/empirical elements) as it is analytical (drawing on conceptual contributions from the literature covered in the course).
