Learning unit contents

Textual semiotics provides a method to analyse texts, literary or not, based upon linguistic premises.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1. Initiation to methods and practices of internal analysis, particularly of literary texts.
2. Inititation to theoretical problems about linguistic textual analysis.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Competence in French language is essential for an appreciation of the complexities of French texts.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Phase 1. Readings (at home) of semiotic interpretations. Discussion (in class) on these readings.
Phase 2. Semiotic analysis of texts : exercises (home). Questions and answers (in class) about these exercises.
Phase 3. Preparatory work for the examination.

Additional information:

Active face-to-face seminar. Class attendance is mandatory. Autumn term. Every Friday, 14:00-16:00, local A2/2/3.

First class : september 22th.

A paper work (10/15 pp.) in lieu of examination must be submitted by the student, both in pdf format to the email address of the teacher and hard-copy in his mailbox, at the latest the first day of the session.
This paper will present an argumented interpretation of a French literary text based upon a semiotic analysis.
