Learning unit contents
- Introduction to major currents in sociological criticism, from Lukacs to Bourdieu, based on this division: sociology of the author/writer, the work/the book, the reader/the public and sociology of the institution of literature.
- Also, internal examination of a particular work, i.e. the Education sentimentale as viewed by Lukacs, Goldmann, Bourdieu, etc., or else external analysis of a literary question: a group, a tendency, a movement, etc.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- To introduce students to the major currents in sociological criticism.
- To read and or explicate in sociological terms of text or a literary phenomenon.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Having an interest in literary criticism and the sociological approach.

Assessment methods and criteria
During the Winter session. An oral examination will be based on the class and on the student paper (original research project, format to be determined).
