Learning unit contents
- Critical and historical approach to para-literary genres, from popular novels to SF books or crime novels.
- Construction of a problematic regarding artistic vs. popular literature as a fundamental distinction operating in the francophone cultural universe.
- Introduction to different literary genres.
- Study of the relationships between popular literature and media cultures in the broad sense, with an introduction to the disciplines that take these cultures as their main object (fan studies, cultural studies).
- Focalization on three sub-genres of science-fiction (Space Opera, Cyberpunk and his derivatives, Ecofictions)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- To understand and explicate in a historical and sociological manner the emergence of para-literature in the 19th, 20th and 21th centuries.
- Enable students to formulate problems within these genres and their relationship with the general literature.

Work to prepare for the month of January and to desposit on eCampus.
In addition, each student is asked to complete a reading assignment by the end of November, based on a work chosen from a corpus provided during the first sessions of the course. This work is part of the final evaluation.
