This learning unit comprises theoretical classes (10h) and a majority of practical sessions (50h).

Theoretical lessons will provide :

  • Basic information related to Good Laboratory Practice (security, how to write a Lab Book, ...)
  • Information on DNA vectors and transgenic mice
  • Basic concepts on immune reactions, required to understand IHC and WB techniques
Practical sessions are divided into 2 themes : RNA analysis (RT-PCR) and WB (Western Blot).

The principles of each of these techniques will be extensively developed during the practical.
In addition, a session will be planned to prepare most of the required solutions and to revise appropriate calculation methods.
Before the practical sessions, an introduction will provide help on how to write and manage a Lab Book.

Good skills in Biology, Molecular Biology and Protein Biochemistry is mandatory.

Theoretical lessons are exclusively given ex-cathedra, on site.

Practical sessions in the laboratory are mandatory.
For each technique, students will conduct 2 rounds of experiments.

-"First Round": getting trained
Experiments are conducted with the help of lab assistants and the results are collected without being evaluated by the teaching staff. Students are invited to ask all their questions in order to get a deep understanding of the protocol and realize the goal and importance of each technical steps.

-"Second Round": Hands-on application
Experiments are conducted by students that are expected to work in autonomy. Nevertheless, lab assistants are there for supervision and will be ready to answer student's questions if they face any difficulty during the technical procedure. After this round, the data obtained will be recorded in the Lab Book and the quality of the results and their interpretation will be evaluated.

Every student will fill in his own lab Book.

Reports related to each session will also be included. Because each technique is unique, specific guidelines will be provided by the dedicated teacher after each session.

In case of orange sanitary code, presence on site will still be mandatory.

This exam will take place early December after all practical sessions.

After an oral presentation of one of the techniques performed during the practical sessions, the student will be subjected to questions from the jury (60% of global evaluation). The grade obtained during this exam is absorptive. This means that any grade below 10/20 will absorb all other grades obtained (reports) and will lead to a second session for this oral exam.

  • The quality of the reports provided after the 2nd round of experiments (quality of the experimental data, quality of the data analysis and interpretation in the Lab Book, specific exercises and questions in the report) will be evaluated. This accounts for 40% of the global evaluation.
  • Personal preparation to the work, investment, autonomy and compliance to Good Laboratory Practise as well as to specific guidelines or rules from the teachers will be taken into account. In case of behavioral problems, shortcomings, lack of attendance or participation or non-compliance to the rules, a penalty (ranging from -1 to -3/20 on the global grade) may be applied.
  • The capacity to perform dilution calculations. After the oral exam, a simple calculation related to the preparation of a chemical solution will be asked to students. If unsuccessful, the student will get a penalty of -1/20 on the global grade).
Attending to practical sessions in the lab is mandatory. Any unjustified absence above 25% of the sessions will lead to the exclusion from the oral examination.
