Learning unit contents
- Reminders: nursing discipline (science/profession), nursing science, nursing concepts and concept analysis, nursing theories (grand theory, middle-range theory, situation-specific theory), critical evaluation of theories, nursing philosophy (contribution of nursing philosophy to the nursing discipline, ontology, epistemology, ethics)
- Discovery of middle-range theories through seminars prepared by students
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- To argue the richness of the nursing discipline concerning nursing sciences, nursing philosophy
- To argue the usefulness of nursing science and nursing philosophy for advanced practice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of moderate-spectrum nursing theories (concepts, propositions, postulates, schematic representation, usefulness for practice and research, criticism of theory), based on theoretical articles (theory development) and articles on the application of theory in clinical practice and research.
- To prepare and conduct a seminar on moderate spectrum nursing theory.
- Positioning oneself on one's own ontology of care and on the development of nursing sciences and the nursing discipline in Belgium

Reverse class: the course is organized in the form of seminars
- Students prepare the course on the basis of a preparation document containing readings as well as questions to be answered or preparation to be carried out.
- Everyone is invited to participate actively in the discussions.
- Each student leads a seminar on a nursing theory of his or her choice.
