Learning unit contents

This course will develop automatisms in finding relevant books and articles on any subject in contemporary history. Individual and collective research on a central theme varying each year. Special focus on printed sources.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Foreign students are expected to master the French language first, as several papers and results of bibliographical research are to be turned in during the academic year and at the end of it. The first part of the course will develop automatisms in finding relevant books and articles on any subject in contemporary history; the second part will be individual and collective research (i.e. identifications, editing of sources, analysis) on a central theme varying each year, which will enable students to develop, in oral and written form, the basic principles of historical writing.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Working knowledge of French, both oral and written.
Reading capacity of English and, possibly, notions of Dutch.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Individual and collective research (i.e. identifications, editing of sources, analysis), which will enable students to develop, in oral and written form, the basic principles of historical writing.

Additional information:

Face-to-face. The main part of the course focuses on personal research in archives and libraries.
A compulsory tutoring in bibliography will be organized.

"Guide d'initiation bibliographique". Available on e-campus at least on Septembre 21th.

Additional information:

Students will be evaluated on account of the bibliographical initiation and written/oral reports: 


  • midyear exam at the end of S1 (10%): bibliography test
  • continuous evaluation: several short reports or oral talks (individual or by group) will be imposed during the whole year.
  • final evaluation June session (90%): individual written report to be delivered in May. 
This written report will be graded according to:


  • the quality and accuracy of documentary research
  • the ability of interpretating and summarizing
  • proficiency in written French Academic and examination regulations
Art. 40 §2: "Teaching staff may declare students inadmissible for exams when they have not participated in the activities which have been stated to be inseparable from the teaching unit in question. [...] The same is true for students who have not submitted, within the set delays or in the prescribed formats, reports, personal work or any work set in the context of the activity in question".
Three unjustified absences will therefore result in the refusal of the first session.
Students who would not have, at the beginning of the second (August) session, delivered the complete list of required works and papers will not be admitted to that session.
The evaluation for the second session will consist in the verification of the improvements made in the final paper not judged sufficient in June. Students having not reached the minimum cotation of 10/20 in January (bibliography test) is supposed to be interrogated again on the same matter in May and/or September.
