Learning unit contents

The course addresses the nature of leadership. Indeed, leadership is a central component of human activity, including in modern organizations in which it is seen as pivotal to achieving strategic objectives and fostering the organizational culture. Whether directing to specific individuals or processes, understanding the defining characteristics of what leadership is and its underlying mechanisms and outcomes at the individual, group, and organizational level are critical for business students.

The course aims at introducing students to the defining characteristics of leadership, to present the major theoretical approaches, and the processes leading to organizational performance and development. The course offers students with a thorough and research-based understanding of leadership issues in modern organizations.

The course is structured around the presentation of the leadership schools:

  • Trait-based leadership
  • New leadership approaches
  • Leadership from the perspective of the followers
  • Relational leadership
  • Leadership in contingencies, context, and situations
  • Leadership development
  • Current issues in leadership

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The intended learning outcomes (ILO) of the course are:

  • Understand the key concepts of leadership and their related theories;
  • Critically compare and analyze different theories of leadership;
  • Identify the key concepts and theories that best apply to real-life situations and problems;
  • Analyze real-life situations and problems in light of the key concepts and theories of the course;
  • Apply a research-based approach and thinking to modern organizations through problematization, hypothesis generation, data collection, and data analysis and discussion;
  • Design and implement effective solutions to real-life situations and problems based on a scientific approach and thinking;
  • Communicate one's point of view and confront it with others.

Learning activities are organized around:

  • Ex-cathedra courses;
  • Individual reading and experimentation;
  • Interactive sessions;
  • Group-based learning activities;
These activities are aligned with the need to understand key concepts and theories while offering pedagogical opportunities to reflect on these concepts and apply them to real-life situations and examples.

Additional information:

The evaluation of the course is composed of an individual MCQ and open-ended questions exam during the session for a total of 16 points. Individual assignments throughout the semester will be proposed and scored on a total of 4 points. These individual assignments will be designed to offer students with opportunities to experiment leadership and develop their reflexivity with regard to the concepts of the course.
