Learning unit contents

The course encompass 15 hours of theoretical courses.
 
Theoretical courses cover two following themes:


  • Introduction to the urban phenomenon
  • Socio-economy of urban spaces
  • Urban spaces, mobility and suburbanisation
  • Urban planning
  • Urban population and urban transition
  • The periurban space: a new geotype?
  • Socio-spatial segregations

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The learning outcomes are the following:
- give the key concepts and approaches of urban geography and urban planning in the context of the Global South
- provide the ability to use those knowledges in relation to the main urban issues (planning, socio-economic development, segregation...)
- to develop an analysis aiming to stimulate critical thinking and civic-mindedness

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course encompass:
- 15 hours of theoretical courses;
- 6 hours of seminars.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The seminar sessions are mandatory. Those sessions are animated by the students who present the results of an analysis in relation to the themes developed in the context of the theoretical courses.
The analytical work is done either individually or by groups of two or three students.
 

Recommended or required readings

Documents available on MyULiège: slide presentations and scientific publications related to the contents of the theoretical courses.

Oral exam on the lectures (with a 20 minutes written preparation) = 50 % of the quotation. Analytical work on the basis of an oral presentation of 20 minutes = 50 % of the quotation.
