Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course includes a theoretical module providing some bases in climatology: structure of the atmosphere, greenhouse effect, the different types of climates, observation instruments, energy balances of the atmosphere and the surface, humidity indicators, potential temperature, winds and general circulation.
This theoretical module is followed by practical sessions where the student will use meteorological and / or climatic data, as well as projections for the future, relating to different regions of the world. This work will be carried out in groups, each group working on a region of its choice. These sessions will apply the concepts seen in the theoretical course by analyzing more specifically:
1. The Köppen-Geiger classification of climates
2. The energy balance of the surface
3. Variables describing the humidity of the air
4. Climate change

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will know the bases of climatology and will be able to apply them to some major environmental problems.
