Learning unit contents

This course looks at places and mechanisms that, contrary to the practice of reading as a solitary act, make the book an eminently social object. The course is divided into three parts, some of which reflect the growing importance in recent years of mediation and animation activities around or through books. The first part of the course deals with fairs and exhibitions, providing an historical overview of their functions over time. It provides an overview of events in terms of their target audience (professionals, readers), whether they are local or international, and whether they are general or specialized (genre, theme). The second part covers events scheduled in bookshops, libraries and cultural centers, ranging from simple book signings to small fairs and meetings. In this part, as in the previous one, the course provides information on the organization, financing and stakes of these events. In the third part, the focus shifts away from the enhancement of editorial catalogs to services geared to the experience and needs of participants. Supported by previous institutions, associations and companies, these events focus on both writing (workshops) and reading (clubs), with aims ranging from pro-fessionalization to the quest for well-being (bibliotherapy).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will have an in-depth knowledge of the different modalities of events in the book world, approached in typological terms, as well as the parameters to be taken into consideration when developing an event.
