The course aims at allowing students to be able to understand human biochemistry and physiology

  • Overview on nervous system physiology
  • Somatic sensory systems (somesthesia, vision,...)

The objective of this first part of the module is to introduce students with the fundamentals of physiology/biochemistry of the nervous system and special sense organs.
4 lessons on the pathophysiology and therapeutic stratégies of
  • Nociception (pain)
  • Disorders of the somatic motor systems
  • Disorders of higher functions & emotions
  • Disorders of homeostasis

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Cardiovascular system

The objective of the course is to master the principles of biochemistry and physiology of the human cardio-vascular system. Furthermore, the student will have understood the importance of feedbacks and interactions between the different parts of the regulatory systems.
More specifically, the learning objectives correspond to the table of contents of the course, described in detail in the "contents of the teaching unit" section.

Respiratory system

The objective of the course is to master the principles of biochemistry and physiology of the human respiratory system. Furthermore, the student will have understood the importance of feedbacks and interactions between the different parts of the regulatory systems.

Nervous system

At the end of this course, the student will be able to describe the principles of operation
-general of the nervous system: communication by electrical and chemical signals
-somatic sensory systems (somesthesia, viaion, hearing, olfaction, taste, proprioception)
-the somatic motor system (automatic and voluntary control of muscle strength)
-the vegetative motor system (sympathic and parasympathic)
-the main cognitive functions and state systems (sleep, emotion, consciousness)
-homeostasis control


He will also be able to describe the physiopathological bases of the treatment
- pain
- physical motor disorders
-the main mental disorders
-homeostasis disorders

Written evaluations will take place in june and in august/september. Evaluations will be organized the same day for all parts of the course Normal and Pathological Human Biochemistry and Physiology (NPHBP). 

For the cardio-vascular module, the exam consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ).

Examinations are written.  They include the following types of questions:

MCQs with certainty coefficients (see note on this subject on the eCampus).


Examinations will take place as on-line (if needed) or presential activities. 

There is no partial exemption for this course, either between the 1st and 2nd session or from one year to the next for the PHARMA, SBIM and DENTIST sections.

However, this rule does not apply to Master of Science in Nursing students. Partial exemptions may be granted.

Written evaluations will take place in june and in august/september. Evaluations will be organized the same day for all parts of this teaching unit. The following types of questions are possible :
- Questions with long answer - Questions with short answer - Multiple choice 
Depending on the sanitary conditions (COVID-19 pandemic), the exam will be organised on site (physical presence: codes green and yellow, possibly orange) or online (virtual: code red, possibly orange).
