Learning unit contents

The aim of this clinical training is to reinforce the basics and knowledge of companion animal medicine and to initiate students to the management of clinical cases within the CVU Companion Animals. This reinforcement is made possible on the one hand by more frequent practical and technical application of the theoretical content, and on the other hand by stimulating a more reflective approach to the student's activity, through frequent contact with the supervisors during the practical work and Skill Lab activities and during clinical activities within the CVU.


The clinical activities take place in a 6-week carousel: AC TP/Skill Lab, AC Consultations/TP, AC Consultations, AC Anaesthesia/Surgery/Skill Lab zoological medicine, AC Hospitalization/Prince Laurent Foundation, AC ICU/Guard/Urgences.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The organisation of the Pet Clinic aims to :
- to put into practice the theory seen during the teaching units relating to the different disciplines of companion animal medicine through different practical work activities and Skill Labs which will cover the fields of internal medicine, surgery, zoological medicine, reproduction and anaesthesiology.
- to develop the student's autonomy in the management of consultations in both companion animals and zoological medicine, to develop a critical mind with regard to the cases encountered and to learn to communicate in a professional manner.
- to teach the student to understand the management of an anaesthetised patient, to prepare a patient for surgery, to participate in the operation and in the cleaning and sterilisation of surgical equipment.
- To develop the student's autonomy in the management of primary medical and surgical cases seen at the Prince Laurent Foundation or hospitalized at the CVU AC.
- To enable students to participate in the reflection on the management and care of complex cases encountered in intensive care and to learn to work in an on-call situation and in an emergency department.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

All theoretical and practical courses in clinical and paraclinical disciplines related to the species concerned by the option are essential prerequisites.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The learning activities of the clinical training programme take place over a six-week period: AC Practical Classes/Skills Lab, AC Consultations/Practical Classes, AC Consultations, AC Anaesthesia/Surgery/Zoological Medicine Skills Lab, AC Hospitalisation/Prince Laurent Foundation, and AC ICU/On-call Duty/Emergencies.

During the clinical rotations, various learning activities are organised to enable students to acquire the clinical skills* listed in the VETE2086 section of the Clinical Skills Record of the Log Book. Each student must have each of these skills validated (signed off by an authorised instructor) in the electronic version of the Log Book as they are completed. Please note that four skills (general physical examination, cardiorespiratory auscultation, neurological examination, and orthopaedic examination) are mandatory, as they are formally assessed.

In addition, throughout their clinical rotations, students must have the clinical cases** they have followed electronically validated in their LogBook (Part 2 of the Master's Log Book: a record of the clinical cases followed by the student during the Master's programme under the supervision of a Faculty instructor). These clinical cases will be counted at the end of Master 3 as part of the VETE-2099 course unit, Cross-disciplinary Professional Activities (M3). Detailed information regarding the Log Book is available on eCampus in the VETE0000-4 Master's Log Book course.

* A clinical skill eligible for validation is defined as a skill listed in the Log Book that has been performed correctly and independently under the direct supervision of a member of the clinical team (intern, assistant, resident, scientific collaborator, professor, or technician). Merely observing a clinical procedure does not, per se, allow validation of the skills taught through that procedure.

** A clinical case eligible for validation is defined as a case in which the student has actively participated. This means a case for which the student has taken the history or obtained information about the history, performed a clinical examination (general and/or specific) or a post-mortem examination, and discussed the case with an instructor (professor, assistant, scientific collaborator, or intern), for example by proposing differential diagnoses, additional diagnostic tests, or a treatment plan. Merely participating in clinical rounds, performing a technical procedure, or administering treatment to a clinical case does not make that case eligible for validation.

Student assessment throughout the different clinical weeks will focus on the student's participation and critical thinking during the various supervised activities conducted in the Skill Lab, practical sessions, and clinical settings.

Activities conducted in the Skill Lab and the four mandatory competencies (general physical examination, cardiorespiratory auscultation, neurological examination, and orthopaedic examination) will be subject to summative assessment.

Failure to validate at least 89% of the competencies listed in section VETE2086-1 of the Clinical Skills Logbook (28 out of the 32 required competencies) will automatically result in an "Absent" grade for this course unit. Competencies must be validated by 31 May 2027 or 23 August 2027, depending on the examination session. If the clinician does not provide feedback when validating a competency, students are expected to actively request it.

Any unjustified absence from clinical activities will result in an "Absent" grade for this course unit. The student will be required to complete an additional clinical week during the second examination session in the clinical area(s) in which the absence occurred.

Any serious breach of expected professional behaviour will negatively affect the final grade for the VETE2086 course unit.

Attendance to the companion animal internal medicine clinic is compulsory.
Any absence should be justified and communicated on the same day.

Medical certifications are required to justify an absence for medical reason and have to be transmitted to Lorena Macas (lmacas@uliege.be) within a week of the absence.
