  • Immobilisation of ruminants + catheterism
  • General examination of ruminants
  • Propaedeutics of the respiratory system of ruminants
  • Propaedeutics of the digestive system of ruminants

  • Semiology of the reproductive organs of female ruminants
  • Analysis of oestrus and gestation in ruminants
  • Semiology of the reproductive organs of ruminants and examination of sperm
  • Semiology of the mammary gland. Individual approach.
  • Semiology of the obstetrics of ruminants
  • Basic ultrasound
  • Semiology of the porcine species including the expertise protocol for boars

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The general objective of the course is to introduce students to methods of collecting abnormal clinical symptoms displayed by ruminants and pigs presenting any kind of illness in order to be able to determine the prognosis and clinical diagnosis.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students are expected to have general knowledge of the content of classes taught in the 1st cycle.

More specifically, the classes taught as part of the course presupposing a good analytical knowledge of the structure and operation of a normal animal (physiology, embryology, anatomy (general and topographic), ethology and appreciation of ruminants).

Students are expected to view videos illustrating the content of clinical activities before participating.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The practical activities associated with this course will take place in the ruminant clinic and the swine clinic (Building B42, routes 87 and 82, respectively) during the mornings according to the schedule provided by the student secretariat (see faculty website). The specific objectives of these activities are accessible on eCampus (Master 1 Course VETE2061-1).

A reminder of the guidelines will be given during the first Semiology class (on Tuesday, September 15, 2026).

In the ruminant clinic, Mondays are generally devoted to restraint. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are primarily dedicated to general examinations and examinations of the respiratory and digestive systems.

In the Swine clinic, the Practical "Boar" takes place on Tuesdays.

Ruminant clinic: To participate in clinical activities, the student must present themselves with the following equipment and materials: clean overalls and boots, a badge (plastic or metal) with their first and last name, a pen, a watch with second hand , a thermometer, a stethoscope, a medical lamp, a hammer for percussion and a plessimetric plate. The student will appear without jewelry, nails will be cut, long hair will be tied up. Safety boots are strongly recommended.

During clinic hours, no cell phones or smartphones will be allowed among students, including to use the stopwatch.

Swine clinic: The Practical "Boar" begins with a knowledge assessment, in a meeting room adjacent to the pig farm (Room Rupo 1 - room 0.84a - route 82), accessible via the courtyard of B42. Equipment: a bic + student card. Do not come with boots or overalls: boots and overalls will be provided to you in the faculty pig farm. In the event of absence from the Practical Boar, whether validly justified or not, the missed Practical must be made up. The student must send an email to porcine.fmv@uliege.be in order to provide a copy of the medical certificate and to agree on a date for a catch-up session.

The Practical Boar will allow students to have the clinical skills listed in section VETE2061 of the Log Book clinical skills book validated. At the end of the Practical, the student will send a scan of the QR code to the address pedagogie.dcp@uliege.be

Important notes - Participation in clinical activities is mandatory and attendance is systematic. - In the event of absence, the reason must be communicated by e-mail before it takes place, the sending time being taken as proof, to the following address: pedagogie.dcp@uliege.be. It is imperative to indicate your last name, first name, group of students and year of study (M1). - Otherwise, the absence will be considered unjustified if it does not follow a serious reason. - The certificates (medical or other) justifying these absences must then be brought to the FMV general student secretariat. A copy will also be sent to the secretariat of the clinical department of production animals (pedagogie.dcp@uliege.be)

- In the event of late arrival (more than 15 minutes late), or in the absence of the necessary equipment, the student will be considered unjustified absent. If the badge is not worn, entry into the clinic will be refused to students who will be considered absent. In the event of absence, the student must make up the missed morning(s) in agreement with the DCP secretariat, as far as possible. - Each unjustified absence will result in the loss of one (-1) point on the final EU assessment mark.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Assessment of theoretical teaching

The semiology of production animals course is the subject of a single written exam organized in January 2027 in the form of short or long answer open questions (QROC and QROL) and multiple choice questions (MCQ) and general solutions implicit 6 and 7 (SGI).

Evaluation of practical activities

A written evaluation on the e-Campus platform will be carried out from the end of the clinical week and will be marked on 3 points for the ruminant part. Lack of interpersonal skills during these activities can affect the grade obtained. By interpersonal skills we mean: punctuality, compliance with instructions including those of biosecurity, active participation, respect for supervisory staff, students and animals.

For the Practical boar, the assessment consists of answering 2 multiple choice questions. It will be marked on 1 point. To prepare for the evaluation, consult the 6 pages of notes available on eCampus and/or the website: https://www.fmv-porcs.uliege.be/TPverrat/

The final mark for the VETE2061 course is made up of 16 points for the evaluation of theoretical lessons and 4 points for the practical clinical activities (3/4 ruminants and ¼ porcine). Passing this exam requires a score greater than or equal to 10/20. Scores between 9.50 and 9.99 will therefore be rounded to 9/20. In the event of failure in this exam, students will be evaluated in the 2nd session on theoretical content alone given the impossibility of organizing clinical activities in the 2nd session. The absence of validation of the competence of the VETE2061 section of the clinical skills book will automatically result in a note of absence for this EU.

If you are repeating the VETE2061-1 course, you may:

-participate once again to practicals and try to improve your score (marked on 4 points);

-ask for a deferral of your score (marked on 4 points) by sending an email to Prof. Martine Laitat (mlaitat@uliege.be) and to Ms. Marie Delacroix (Marie.Delacroix@uliege.be).

Failure to validate the competency for section VETE2061 of the clinical competency logbook will automatically result in an absence record for this course unit.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Clinical activities in ruminants will be carried out by several different participants: groomers, student workers, and supervisors.
