Observation training and professional training workshop

As part of the observation internship (SO), students will be required to complete three types of activities.

Attend an information session

Complete two half-days of observation at high schools, one in transitional education and the other in vocational education.

Attend a debriefing session for the SO.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

These teaching practicums will take place in high schools and will provide students with the opportunity to test the lesson plans they have prepared in advance, implement them with students, and discuss them with their practicum supervisor, possibly using a video recording.

A subject-specific instructional specialist-a pedagogue from a university or a college of education-may come to observe the student teacher's lesson.

Teaching practicums are crucial moments in the gradual development of teaching skills. Students must be fully engaged in lesson preparation and in the teaching responsibilities assigned to them. The student teacher must commit in writing to respecting the institution, the supervising teacher, and the students in their class, both ethically and pedagogically. Failure to comply with these rules will result in termination of the practicum.

The teaching practicums will provide students with the opportunity to experience different types of instruction, different teaching methods, and different upper-secondary school student populations.

Practicum locations must be entered into the dedicated platform at least THREE weeks before the practicum begins; practicum schedules must be entered into the platform at least one week in advance.

Organized into disciplinary or interdisciplinary groups, the AFPs aim to develop students' reflective skills before, during, or after a practicum.

Participation in the AFPs is mandatory. Except in cases of force majeure as determined by the course instructors, two absences (whether excused or unexcused) will result in a failing grade for the AFPs.

Teaching internship B and professional training workshop

These teaching placements will take place in upper secondary schools and will provide students with the opportunity to test the lesson plans they have prepared in advance, to deliver them to pupils and to discuss them with their placement supervisor, possibly using a video recording.

A subject-specialist teaching expert, a pedagogue from the University or a University of Applied Sciences, may come to observe the trainee's lesson.

Teaching placements are crucial stages in the gradual acquisition of teaching skills. Students must be fully involved in lesson preparation and in the teaching responsibilities entrusted to them. The trainee must undertake in writing to respect the institution, the supervising teacher and the pupils in their class, both ethically and pedagogically. Failure to comply with these rules will result in the termination of the placement.

Teaching placements will provide students with the opportunity to engage with different types of teaching, different teaching methods and different groups of upper secondary school pupils.

Placement locations must be entered on the dedicated platform at least THREE weeks before the placement begins; placement timetables must be entered on the platform at least one week in advance.

Organised into subject-specific or interdisciplinary groups, the AFPs aim to develop students' reflective practice before, during or after a placement.

Attendance at AFPs is compulsory. Except in cases of force majeure, as assessed by the course coordinators, two absences (whether excused or not) will result in a mark of 'absent' for the AFPs.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Observation training and professional training workshop

Take a first reflective look at the teaching profession, drawing in particular on the observations made.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

The main objective of teaching practicums is to place the future teacher in a situation that most closely resembles their future professional practice. These teaching situations encourage future teachers to apply the teaching skills they developed during their initial teacher training (AFP).

By the end of this practicum, students will be able to develop a practicum plan, prepare a complete lesson, deliver the lesson, reflect on their practice with a view to improving it, take into account the advice and feedback from their supervisors, and, based on this, set personal goals for their future teaching practice.

Teaching internship B and professional training workshop

The main aim of teaching placements is to place the trainee teacher in a teaching situation that most closely resembles their future professional practice. These teaching situations encourage trainee teachers to draw upon the teaching skills they have developed during their initial teacher training (AFP).

By the end of this placement, the student will be able to draw up a placement plan, prepare a complete lesson, deliver the lesson, reflect on their practice with a view to improving it, take on board the advice and feedback from their supervisors and, on this basis, set personal goals for their future teaching practice.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

To be granted access to teaching practicums, students must have signed the practicum participant's statement of commitment and must have regularly attended classes, exercises, and AFP sessions (attendance is monitored). If, during these activities, any deficiencies are identified (proficiency in French, scientific content, etc.), the Biology Teaching Methods Department reserves the right, as a form of individualized support, to impose additional requirements for access to teaching practicums and, if necessary, to postpone them.

Students must comply with the practicum rules provided during the special biology teaching methods course.

Teaching internship B and professional training workshop

To be granted access to teaching placements, students must have signed the placement agreement and must have attended lectures, exercises and AFP sessions (attendance monitored) on a regular basis. If, during these activities, any shortcomings are identified (proficiency in French, scientific content, etc.), the Department of Biology Education reserves the right, as part of individualised support, to impose additional conditions for access to teaching placements and, where necessary, to postpone them.

Students must comply with the placement rules provided during the specialised biology education course

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Observation training and professional training workshop

Two sessions: an information session (2 hours) and a session to review the Observation Internship (3 hours) in the form of small, multidisciplinary group work.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

The supervised exercises in the AFP program help students develop instructional sequences (planning, preparation, reflective analysis) for their individual teaching placements, based on specific requirements and topics.

The Wednesday sessions (subject-specific teaching methodology courses) address the essential aspects of science education, and during the Professional Training Workshops, students make connections between theory, research in teaching methodology, and classroom practice.

The practicum supervisor guides the student in their professional practice; the instructional specialists and educators meet with this supervisor during on-site visits and use this opportunity to review progress with both the student and the supervisor.

Teaching internship B and professional training workshop

The supervised exercises in the AFP programme help to develop teaching sequences (planning, preparation, reflective review) for each student's teaching placements, in line with the requirements and topics covered.

The Wednesday sessions (subject-specific teaching methodology classes) enable students to explore the key aspects of science teaching, whilst the Professional Training Workshops provide an opportunity to make connections between theory, research in teaching methodology and classroom practice.

The placement supervisor supports the student in their professional practice; the pedagogues and teaching specialists meet with this placement supervisor during on-site visits and use this opportunity to review progress with both the student and the supervisor.

During the practicums (A and B), students will be supervised by members of the Special Education in Biology program and/or by an educational specialist. The purpose of these visits is to assess the work environment, identify challenges and strengths, and track progress in the teaching profession (development of professional identity). Depending on everyone's availability and following the observed lesson, the student will have the opportunity to discuss any difficulties or questions with each of the instructional specialists or educational consultants, in the presence of the practicum supervisor, if possible. The minimum practicum requirements will be available on eCampus.

A written report will subsequently be provided to the student, including the evaluation received for this visit (Internship A or Internship B), as well as comments and objectives to consider for the next internship (B and long-term).

A complete internship binder (ring binder) will be required for each internship (A, B, and long-term) in the classroom. This binder must comply with the guidelines provided and available for download on eCampus and must be turned in by the deadlines set at the beginning of the year.

The practicum grade will be based on the grades from subject-matter experts and educators, as well as the evaluation by the practicum supervisors. The student's progress between parts A and B of this first internship period will be taken into account when determining the grade.

There will be no second session for the internships, and a grade lower than 10/20 may result in a deferral.

If the preparation for the day's class(es) is not present at the time of the visit, the visit will result in a failing grade.

An incorrectly filled-out schedule (incorrect or incomplete address; incorrect schedule) that makes it impossible to conduct a fieldwork visit may result in the deduction of 5 fieldwork periods out of the 20 (A and B).

During the placements (A and B), students will be supervised by members of the Special Education in Biology team and/or by an educational consultant. The aim of these visits is to gain an understanding of the working context, the challenges and strengths, as well as progress in the teaching profession (development of professional identity). Depending on everyone's availability and following the observed lesson, students will have the opportunity to discuss any difficulties or questions with each of the teaching specialists/educationalists, in the presence of the placement supervisor where possible. The minimum placement requirements will be available on eCampus.

A written report will subsequently be provided to the student, including the assessment received for this visit (Placement A or Placement B), as well as comments and objectives to be taken into account for the next placement (Placement B and long-term placement).

A complete placement folder (ring binder) will be required for each placement (A, B and long-term), to be kept in the classroom. This folder must comply with the guidelines provided and available for download on eCampus, and must be returned by the deadlines set at the start of the academic year.

The placement mark will be based on the marks awarded by specialist teaching staff and educationalists, as well as the assessment by the placement supervisor(s). The student's progress between parts A and B of this first placement period will be taken into account when determining the mark.

There will be no second sitting for placements, and a mark below 10/20 may result in the student's placement being deferred.

If the preparation for the day's lesson(s) is not present at the time of the visit, this will result in a mark of 'Fail'.

Incorrectly provided timetable details (incorrect or incomplete address; incorrect timetable) resulting in the inability to visit the work placement may lead to the deduction of 5 work placement periods from the total of 20 (A and B).
