Organisation and examination
All year long, with partial in January
If a student fails an examination during the first term:
- They are permitted to resit the assessed subject during the second term (May-June);
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This course exposes students to current questions in astrophysics, geophysics, oceanography and space technologies through attendance at seminars and conferences held within the AGO department. Besides these, virtual seminars may also be organised.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
A better understanding and a critical outlook on contemporary research.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
None. The student will have to evaluate which seminars correspond best to his/her interests.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Attend seminars and discuss with the speaker.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
The students will attend at least 10 seminars during the academic year. Attendance at all 10 seminars is a condition for passing the course; failure to meet this requirement results in failing the course. The list of the past and future seminars is available on the web server of the AGO department. http://www.ago.ulg.ac.be/PeM/Semi/index_e.php

Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
oral exam
Continuous assessment
Out-of-session test(s)
Further information:
The final mark is divided into two parts. One part is continuous assessment, which takes place after each seminar, and the other is a presentation during the examination session. Continuous assessment is weighted at 0.4 and the final presentation at 0.6 of the final mark, which is then rounded. The details of every mark will not be communicated prior to the final exam. Students can receive feedback about their performance for the first two or three questionnaires.
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT EXAM
Continuous assessment is divided into two complementary parts:
Participation and discussion (the hour following the seminar, or on the same day for seminars held at different times). After each seminar, one hour is devoted to a group discussion with the students. This discussion allows for an assessment of the students' understanding of the content covered, their analytical skills and their perspective on the presentation. Active participation in the discussions is expected.
Comprehension questionnaire. At the end of the session, students complete a questionnaire on their understanding of the seminar. The answers to the questionnaires will be written by hand and handed in at the end of the discussion session.
Total number of assessments: 5 questionnaires throughout the year. The continuous assessment mark corresponds to the average of the 5 best questionnaires.
FINAL EXAMINATION:
The examination will consist of a 15-minute mini-seminar in English, and weighted at 0.6 of the final mark. The mini-seminar will be based on a recent research article (< 2 years old) in one of the fields of astrophysics, geophysics or oceanography and approved by a course supervisor two weeks before the start of the examination session. The selected article must not be directly related to the subject of the Master's thesis if both exams are taken in the same year.
