Learning unit contents

The sociology course aims to :

  • to initiate students to sociological reasoning, through an analytical approach of the emergence context of sociology as a scientific discipline.
  • to allow students to build a minimal sociological knowledge base that can be transposed to any societal problem in the bio-food field, in order to understand the constraints - both technical and social - of a society in perpetual evolution,
  • equip students with the scientific approach in sociology based on the basic techniques and principles of scientific research in these field.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

In this perspective, students will be led to :

  • discover the contribution of sociology to describe the social from different applications and scientific texts,
  • understand the scientific approach in sociology on the basis of practical exercises and a theoretical presentation,
  • analyze and deepen, in groups of four, a societal theme in which their scientific training fits, with the help of theoretical and methodological tools specific to sociology.

The course is resolutely participative and is nourished by the students' opinions, reflections and observations.

It is organized around theoretical and practical sessions.

Each session is built around methodological and theoretical frameworks as well as moments of discussion and exchange in order to help students carry out their group work.

The teaching mode is:

  • hybrid (face-to-face and distance learning depending on the conditions related to the health crisis) via the tools of the Ultra platform (https://www.ecampus.uliege.be/),
  • resolutely participative and dynamic, based on group work.

Additional information:

The sociology course - and the introduction to the sociological approach that underlies it - will be evaluated by a summary note written in groups analyzing - empirically and theoretically - with the help of tools specific to sociology, a societal issue in which their training is involved.

Assessment methods:

  • Research report of approximately 15 pages (excluding cover page, table of contents, introduction/conclusion, appendices) to be written using the template provided on Ultra.
  • Group assignment on a sociological research topic related to the theme covered in C. COLAUX's Current Issues in the Environment course (BAC1).
  • Submission via the Ultra assignment tool by 11:59 p.m. on the first day of the exam session, in the "Evaluation" tab, in PDF format (file name: Sociology_Group No. XXX_Name 1, Name 2, Name 3, Name 4, Name 5).
  • Standard template to be used, otherwise penalties will be imposed for non-compliance with instructions.
  • Assessment and submission procedures are identical for the first and second sessions.
  • Bonus points may be awarded for active participation in exercises and attendance at classes.

Evaluation criteria :

  • Presentation of the research topic, its scope, and the initial question.
  • Contextualized presentation of the research topic based on a documentary analysis of gray and scientific literature,
  • Empirical exploration of the research topic based on at least two interviews with actors in the field,
  • Description of the translation process and its different stages,
  • Formulation of findings related to the research field and responding to the initial question posed,
  • Use of sociological tools and references (referencing standards: APA),
  • Contrasting presentation of the chosen analytical framework and justification of the choice made,
  • Sociological analysis of the literary data and empirical materials produced.
  • Reflexivity and forward-looking dimension (how could this line of thinking be extended?).

Any instance of plagiarism will result in the assignment being invalidated and the student being unable to earn the credits associated with the TFB (see the rules regarding plagiarism available on the following webpage: https://my.student.uliege.be/cms/c_11161787/fr/mystudent-prevenir-le-plagiat ).


The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI):
We also refer students to the ULiège Charter on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Academic Work (see https://www.student.uliege.be/cms/c_19230399/fr/ faq-student-charte-uliege-d-utilisation-des-intelligences-artificielles-generatives-dans-les-travaux-universitaires ). This charter outlines the distinction between what is permitted or desirable and what is not when using generative AI in an academic context (courses, assignments, exams, reports, and other learning activities).
As part of this course, the use of generative artificial intelligence is strictly prohibited for content generation, writing texts, or conducting documentary research (except for the portion of the assignment that specifically requires the use of AI).

The use of AI is permitted only for the purposes of spelling correction, grammar, or rephrasing, without altering the intellectual content (e.g., checking grammar and spelling, translating, improving style, or rephrasing without changing the meaning of specific passages or paragraphs with which students struggle while writing), while encouraging critical, transparent use of AI and striving to go beyond its capabilities.

Students must:

  • complete the form declaring the use of generative AI in their work, available on the "Regulations" page of the Faculty's website: https://www.student.fass.uliege.be/cms/c_7151929/fr/reglements-et-formulaires, "Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence," or on Ultra;
  • make all documents used (texts, videos, etc.) and the analytical work performed (working notes, coding, analyses) available to the teaching staff.
In case of doubt regarding the authenticity of the work or in the absence of sufficient factual evidence, the evaluation may be postponed to the second session.
