The Other: The Expression of a Possible World
This course will offer a detailed study of the famous "definition" of the Other proposed by Deleuze, a phrase originally coined by Michel Tournier. We will consider this "definition" within a broader inquiry into the concept of the Other, from Descartes to Levinas, to highlight the specificity of the Tournier-Deleuze proposal. The terms forming this definition-especially the notions of expression and possible world-will be methodically examined and reconnected to their philosophical roots (particularly Spinoza and Leibniz). The goal of the course will be to elucidate the meaning of this definition, its relevance and originality regarding the metaphysical problem of the Other, and how it circulates between the works of Michel Tournier and Gilles Deleuze.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this course, students will be able to problematize the metaphysical question of the Other, to master the philosophical and historical concepts developed around it and to explain more specifically its Deleuzian and Tournierian conception.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A background in bachelor's-level philosophy is desirable

The course will follow a traditional structure centered on the three main concepts studied (the Other, expression, and possible world), through historical lectures and in-class text analyses.
