Learning unit contents
This internship takes place over a period of 2.5 months during the first semester of the second year of the Master's program (Master 2). The internship in Pharmacognosy is open to students from all specializations.
Three themes are available for students who wish to acquire additional training in pharmacognosy:
Theme A: Quality Control of Herbal Raw Materials and Herbal Medicinal Products
Theme B: Integration into Research
- Methods for the isolation and structural elucidation of natural substances with biological potential, mainly antimalarial, antiviral, and anticancer compounds
- Plant metabolomics
Under Theme A, students will primarily be introduced to the pharmacognostic methods described in the European Pharmacopoeia and their applications in the field of herbal raw materials and commercial plant-derived products (pharmaceutical and agri-food industries, pharmacy inspection services, and public and private analytical laboratories).
Under Theme B, students will be introduced to ongoing research activities in Liège in the fields of metabolomics, ethnopharmacology, and biodiversity (isolation of bioactive natural substances found in medicinal and toxic plants from various regions of the world). The biological activities of extracts and purified compounds are evaluated either locally or in collaboration with various laboratories (parasitology, oncology, neurology, inflammation, etc.). These multidisciplinary research projects are supported by the FNRS, the Walloon Region, and ARES-CCD.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
