Learning unit contents
Music is an art form, a means of expression and an essential part of our cultural heritage. But music is also a major economic activity that involves numerous stakeholders, generates significant revenue and relies on constantly evolving business models. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the specific economic aspects of the music industry, covering the entire spectrum from artistic creation to the consumption of the artistic product. The economics of music will also be examined from a historical perspective, from its origins in the era of the first printed music in the 16th century to current developments in streaming platforms and artificial intelligence.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this unit, students will have a sound general understanding of the economic characteristics of the music industry and a broad overview of how the current music ecosystem has gradually developed over the centuries.

Prerequisite and co-requisite modules are listed within each programme. No prior knowledge of music is required to take the course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is based on lectures and interactive sessions with students (exercises, readings and discussions). Students will also be asked, from time to time, to prepare short presentations of around ten minutes on topics related to the course.
The course will also feature contributions from one or more guest speakers working in the music industry.
