Learning unit contents

As current guidelines advocate evidence-based practice (EBP) management, this course will address this approach to physiotherapy management.
This course will also develop critical thinking skills, learn about the qualities of a good scientific study and how to obtain quality information.
These elements are essential for all health professionals given the amount of information available today and the need to be able to find reliable sources of information and to analyse the information provided.
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Knowledge

 

By the end of the course unit, the student will be able to:

  • Define Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), explain its relevance to physiotherapy, and describe its fundamental principles, including the integration of its three pillars: the best available scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and the patient's values, preferences, and individual characteristics.
  • Describe the main steps of the EBP process, from formulating a clinical question to evaluating and integrating the findings into practice.
  • Describe and understand the hierarchy of evidence, and identify where the main types of studies and sources of scientific information are positioned within this hierarchy.
  • Identify the main sources of scientific information relevant to physiotherapy, including scientific databases, journals, clinical practice guidelines, and other validated resources.
  • Identify and explain the main elements used to assess the relevance, quality, and reliability of scientific or clinical information.
  • Identify and explain the main types of bias that may influence the results and interpretation of a scientific study.
  • Understand the principles of scientific reasoning applied to clinical practice, including the need to critically compare one's knowledge, observations, and hypotheses with the available scientific evidence.
  • Understand the different factors that may contribute to a patient's progress during treatment, and distinguish the specific effects of an intervention from other factors that may contribute to the observed improvement.


 

Skills

By the end of the course unit, the student will be able to:



  • Adopt an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approach when searching for, selecting, and using information relevant to physiotherapy practice.
  • Identify and use reliable sources and platforms to access high-quality scientific and healthcare information.
  • Critically analyse and interpret new scientific or clinical information, considering its source, methodology, reliability, relevance, and applicability.
  • Position scientific information within the hierarchy of evidence and take its level of evidence into account when interpreting it.
  • Progressively develop professional and scientific reasoning skills by integrating current and relevant knowledge into their reflection and, progressively, into their clinical reasoning.
  • Analyse the relevance of a physiotherapy intervention or therapeutic procedure by considering its effectiveness, the scientific evidence supporting it, its indications, and its appropriateness for the individual patient.
  • Critically evaluate a physiotherapy intervention, taking into account the different factors that may explain a patient's progress and avoiding the systematic attribution of observed improvement to the intervention itself.
  • Engage in continuous reflective practice by developing the ability to question their knowledge, reasoning, decisions, and future professional practices in light of the available evidence.
  • Recognise the need to regularly update their knowledge and engage in continuous learning and professional development.
  • Develop professional, ethical, and responsible behaviour as healthcare professionals and citizens, particularly by adopting a critical and responsible approach to health information and actively engaging in their ethical, scientific, and professional education.
