Learning unit contents

This course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts and tools of linguistic analysis and to apply them to the analysis of Dutch constructions that are particularly problematic for French-speaking learners.

The course will begin with an in-depth analysis of basic syntactic functions, before moving on to the analysis specific constructions, such as er, pronominal adverbs and passive voice.

The course will adopt an inductive methodology inspired by corpus linguistics and will initiate students to the creation of a database for linguistic analysis. Students will learn to use tools such as Sketchengine and Excel. They will also learn to use reference books such as the Algemene Nederlandse Spraakkunst (ANS) and the Van Dale Online Woordenboek.

Through these various activities, students will develop their ability to analyze Dutch constructions, but also sharpen their understanding of how it works.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the formal and functional characteristics of the word classes that structure the Dutch lexicon;
  • Describe and explain the following grammatical constructions: er, pronominal adverb, passive voice;
  • Analyze these structures in an original text;
  • Conduct a search in Sketchengine;
  • Build a database for linguistic analysis.
