Learning unit contents

The course offers a practical approach to basic motor and psychomotor activities, with a view to training students in physiotherapy practice. It includes physical conditioning activities in the gym and outdoors, enabling students to experiment with different physical qualities and training methods. Particular attention is paid to movement observation, safety, coaching, giving instructions, individualisation and progressive training.
Students also learn how to prepare and lead part of a group session. Individualised cardiovascular activities, as well as an introduction to various team sports and racket sports, round off this motor skills training.
Finally, an online learning module and a half-day observation session at CEReKi provide an opportunity to explore children's motor and psychomotor development, the adaptation of the environment, the adaptation of play situations and the teaching practices of activity leaders.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to:
* try out different physical activities and methods for developing physical abilities, whilst adhering to technical and safety principles;
* observe a peer's movement, identify the key elements of positioning and execution, and then provide relevant feedback;
* give clear instructions, demonstrate an exercise and act as a coach whilst ensuring safety;
* prepare and lead part of a physical activity session, designed for an individual or a group;
* manage the space, equipment and group dynamics, whilst taking individual abilities into account;
* analyse needs and adapt a task, workload or intensity according to the participant's level and the objective being pursued;
* suggest a progressive approach using N-1, N and N+1 variations;
* apply the concepts of body schema, movement education and motor skills when observing and supervising the activity;
* use various indicators to monitor and tailor the level of effort to each individual;
* explain the benefits of regular physical activity from the perspective of prevention, health education and the promotion of independence;
* analyse a situation involving a child's motor and psychomotor development, taking into account the environment, the tasks set, the way the activity is led and the motor behaviours observed.

These learning outcomes contribute to the development of the following skills within the physiotherapy and rehabilitation programme:
* Designing physical activity programmes tailored to different population groups;
* Managing and leading individual or group physical activities;
* Applying fundamental concepts relating to the body and movement from an educational perspective;
* Providing education with a focus on health promotion
* Analysing and adapting teaching strategies for physical activity in line with the objectives set.
Keywords: physical activity, activity programmes, group management, individual, facilitation, supervision, communication, body schema, movement education, motor concepts, health education, health promotion, autonomy, regular physical activity, teaching strategy, adapted training methodology.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The theoretical modules on basic motor and psychomotor skills (Block 1: Physiotherapy) and an introduction to the fundamentals of training (Block 2: Physiotherapy), as well as the practical module on physical education, are pre- or co-requisites

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is based on practical lessons, individual and small-group workshops, role-play exercises, as well as observation and peer feedback. It also includes a learning module on eCampus and a half-day of observing psychomotor activities at CEReKi.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Further information:

A combination of face-to-face and distance learning activities.

Practical classes are spread across the two four-month terms in accordance with the timetable.

Attendance is compulsory. If, at the end of the academic year, an attendance rate of at least two-thirds has not been achieved, the student will be declared absent for the June and September examination sessions.

In the event of a sporting injury, the student remains obliged to attend the course and must ensure an appropriate level of participation, in particular through observation, analysis or assisting with coaching. Otherwise, they will be marked absent.

The learning module dedicated to CEReKi is a compulsory activity to be completed online via eCampus.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Documents for each part will be provided as and when required by the instructors in charge.

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Out-of-session test(s)

Further information:

Assessment covers all parts of the course and takes the following into account:

attendance, motivation and active participation;

the quality of involvement in observations, coaching and group work;

the preparation and facilitation of a section of a session as part of the guided exercises;

level of physical fitness and progress, which account for a limited proportion of the mark;

completion of the CEReKi learning pathway on eCampus, attendance at the presentation session and participation in the half-day observation session at CEReKi.

Work placement(s)

As part of this practical course, students are also required to undertake observation placements at CEREKi (Centre for Psychomotor Therapy and Basic Motor Skills Education).
