Adapted physical and sport activities

Theory

Sports activities adapted to handicaps:

- the levels and structures of adapted physical activities in Belgium and the rest of the world.

- the classification of handicaps and the medical classifications of different types of handicapped people.

- Technical, tactical and technological analysis of sports practiced by physically handicapped people: adapted basketball, adapted tennis, adapted table tennis, seated volleyball.

- Technological evolutions (sport carriages, artificial limbs)

- The methods for evaluating the physical qualities of a musculoskeletal handicapped person

- Sensory impairment and sports

- Intellectual impairment and sports

- Physiological constraints and sporting activities (e.g. obesity, diabetes, etc.)

Theory

This course aims to develop the skills needed to design, implement, and evaluate adapted physical activity and sports programs for individuals with motor, sensory, or intellectual impairments. Drawing on the latest scientific evidence, it fosters an evidence-based approach that allows interventions to be tailored to each participant's capabilities, needs, and goals. With a focus on prevention and health promotion, students will gain an understanding of how adapted physical activity contributes to improved quality of life, social participation, and the maintenance of independence for people with disabilities. The course also places significant emphasis on developing skills in group management, supervision, and communication-competencies essential for leading safe, inclusive, and motivating physical activities. Finally, students will learn to employ pedagogical strategies adapted to the participants' specific characteristics, thereby fostering engagement, progress, self-determination, and autonomy in the practice of regular physical activity.

Physiotherapy practice

Practical sessions allow students to experience various adapted sports in real-life settings (wheelchair basketball, floor badminton, sitting volleyball, and torball). These sessions consist of six 3-hour blocks (comprising three 1-hour segments) held on Wednesday afternoons.

Theory

Practical works authorize students to live in real situation different adapted sports (basket-ball, badminton, volley-ball, torball). The organization of the practical sessions will be presented to students from the different study programs during the first theoretical class.

Attendance at practical sessions is mandatory.

Admission to the written exam may be denied if attendance at practical sessions falls below two-thirds.

N.B.: Any medical certificate must be submitted to the person in charge no later than one week after the start of the period of incapacity. Any medical certificate received after this deadline will be considered invalid.
