Lambert Lombard and 16th-Century Art in Liège: Theoretical, Historical, and Practical Approaches, with In Situ Study

If there is one country that experienced a true Renaissance, in the literal sense of the term, during the 16th century, it is the ecclesiastical principality of Liège. This is attested by the multitude of monuments and works of art that have survived both past and more recent destruction and that remain accessible to our appreciation today, in the city of Liège, its museums, and its churches. Whenever possible, we will examine them in situ: within the framework of this course, particular emphasis will be placed on direct engagement with buildings and objects in their material form. Nor will we shy away from the sometimes pressing question of how this precious and fragile heritage is to be preserved.

The works studied will nevertheless be situated, on the basis of the available historical documentation, within the context that determined their appearance, as well as their original meaning and function. Particular attention will be devoted to the wealth of forms of expression and the exceptional diversity of cultural references, both those of the artists and those of their patrons.

Special attention will, of course, be devoted to Lambert Lombard, an internationally renowned artist and the leading figure of the "Liège Renaissance."
