Learning unit contents

After a historical overview of the discipline and a reveiw on the fundamentals of science, the course focuses on presenting the main methods of study and analysis applied to heritage sites and artefacts. It explores several key themes at the heart of current research. It covers observation techniques (macro and microscopy), imaging techniques (X-ray, UV, IR, scanning, etc.) and techniques for the elemental and molecular analysis  (PIXE, XRF, Raman, HPLC, LA-ICP-MS, etc.) used in the study of both pieces of art and archaeological objects. It reviews methods borrowed from geomatics, including GIS, for the study of sites. The main principles of dating methods (dendrochronology, 14C, thermoluminescence, archaeomagnetism) will be examined so that they can be applied to historical questions. Finally, bioarchaeology, in particular palynology and anthropology, will be covered for the study of plant, animal or human remains. As part of this course, sessions devoted to specific case studies are planned, along with practical work and laboratory visits. These will give students hands-on experience with various objects and materials, as well as with the methods and equipment used in archaeometry.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

students will be able to understand the basics of analytical techniques, the context in which they are applied, and the type of data they provide.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

There are no prerequisites. A refresher on the basics of chemistry and physics will be provided at the start of the course.
